Insufficient evidence
The evidence backing Zi Su Zi for age-related cognitive decline, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, osteoporosis, cancer, and headache is insufficient to rate. We don't have reliable data on whether this ingredient works for any of these uses in the facts we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Perilla is generally well tolerated when used as a food. However, supplement-strength products haven't been well studied, so caution is warranted.
The most common adverse effect reported with topical use is dermatitis. Orally, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported in both adults and children who consumed perilla seeds; some research points to oleosin as the allergenic compound.
Additionally, breathing in smoke from roasted perilla seeds has triggered occupational asthma in workers. There isn't enough safety data to use medicinal amounts of perilla during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you in those situations.
