Perilla is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement-strength products haven't been thoroughly studied, so caution is warranted. The most common side effect from topical perilla is dermatitis (skin irritation).
Orally, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported, particularly in people who've consumed perilla seeds — some research points to a compound called oleosin as the likely culprit. Additionally, breathing in smoke from roasted perilla seeds can trigger occupational asthma in sensitive individuals.
