Why get vaccinated? Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine may prevent pneumococcal disease that may occur with infection due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause the following: ear or sinus infections or serious infections of the lung, brain and spinal cord, or bloodstream.
