Clinical
Calamine lotion is a topical skin product marketed as an over-the-counter monograph drug. It contains zinc oxide and ferric oxide red, which are commonly used together in products intended to soothe minor skin irritation and itching. Zinc oxide functions as a mild protectant and astringent, while ferric oxide red is included primarily to give the lotion its characteristic pink color. This type of product is typically applied to the skin surface for temporary relief of minor discomforts.
