Key points

  • Immediate-release tramadol tablets can safely be cut in half.
  • Extended-release tramadol products (e.g. Tramadol ER, Ryzolt) should not be cut or crushed.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out to us! Yes, immediate-release tramadol tablets (Ultram) can safely be cut or split in half. In fact, many tramadol tablets are scored down the middle, making it easier to evenly split them.

I do want to mention that there are some tramadol products that are 'extended-release' that should not be cut.

Below is a list of 'extended-release' tramadol products that should not be cut or split:

  • Conzip (tramadol extended-release capsule)
  • Tramadol ER capsule
  • Rybix (tramadol orally disintegrating tablet) **Currently off the market***
  • Ryzolt (tramadol extended-release tablet)
  • Ultram ER (tramadol extended-release tablet) Tramadol ER tablet

It is important not to split, crush or otherwise alter any of the above extended-release tramadol products. Doing so could ruin the extended-release mechanism of the drug, causing the entire dose to be released at once. This shortens the duration of action, and more concerning, can increase the risk of side effects.

Final Words

Thanks for your question! Reach out again if anything else comes up for you.
