Answer
Thanks for reaching out to us! Yes, Zyrtec-D (cetirizine; pseudoephedrine) can safely be taken with Mucinex (guaifenesin). There is no drug interaction between them.
All three of the drugs that are contained in these two products are in different drug classes and work in different ways to treat cough/cold symptoms.
Zyrtec-D Information
Zyrtec-D contains:
- Cetirizine
- Pseudoephedrine
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine, which are noted their long duration of action (around 24 hours per dose) and lack of strong sedative effects when compared to first-generation antihistamines, like Benadryl.
Pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant and is the active ingredient in several OTC (over-the-counter) products, including Sudafed. It is commonly used in combination with antihistamines. These products include:
- Claritin-D
- Allegra-D
- Zyrtec-D
Mucinex Information
Mucinex contains the active ingredient guaifenesin and is used to relieve chest congestion.
Guaifenesin is in a class of medications called expectorants and it works by thinning the mucus in the air passages to make it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways.
Mucinex is generally very well tolerated, with minimal side effects and no known major drug interactions
Taking Zyrtec-D With Mucinex
As mentioned, there is no drug interaction between Zyrtec-D and Mucinex. You can feel safe taking them together.
