Ratings come from the documented interaction literature and are reviewed by a pharmacist. They describe the documented risk of the combination, not what will necessarily happen to you — your dose, timing, and health picture all matter.
What happens
Elevations of International Normalized Ratio serum values and potentiation of anticoagulant effects
Interaction Deep Dive
Concurrent use of chondroitin sulfate with anticoagulants might increase the risk of bleeding. In a case report, a 69-year-old man developed elevations of his International Normalized Ratio after adding chondroitin sulfate to a stable dose regimen of warfarin1. Chondroitin sulfate is a component of danaparoid; theoretically, chondroitin may increase the anti-factor Xa level. Conversely, no significant hematological changes were noted in a group of patients during six months of oral chondroitin therapy 2, suggesting that there may be no clinically significant effect.
