Concomitant use of peginterferon alfa-2a and telbivudine is contraindicated due to the increased risk and severity of peripheral neuropathy. In a clinical trial, administration of peginterferon alfa-2a 180 mcg subQ weekly with telbivudine 600 mg daily was associated with an increased risk of occurrence and severity of peripheral neuropathy compared with either therapy alone. The risk of peripheral neuropathy may occur with any dosage regimen of peginterferon alfa-2a or other alfa interferons. Telbivudine therapy should be interrupted if peripheral neuropathy is suspected and discontinued if confirmed1.
