Elagolix Sodium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. Because Orilissa (elagolix) is a pill you swallow, that gel could in theory grab onto some of the medicine and keep your body from absorbing the full dose. If less elagolix gets in, it may not control your endometriosis pain and bleeding as well.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's a theoretical concern based mostly on animal studies using diets very high in agar, not real cases with this drug. Occasional culinary use (like agar in a dessert) is unlikely to be a problem. To be safe with supplement doses, separate them by a few hours and check with your pharmacist.

Orilissa (elagolix) is used to treat moderate to severe pain associated with endometriosis — a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing significant pain.

This includes general pelvic pain as well as pain during sex (dyspareunia). How long you can take it depends on your dose and your overall health, so your prescriber will tailor the treatment duration to you.
