Gabapentin enacarbil falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. The concern is that this gel could trap some of your Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil) and keep your body from soaking up the full dose. If less medicine gets absorbed, you might notice it working less well, meaning more restless legs symptoms at night or less relief from that lingering shingles nerve pain.

I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical worry. It comes from animal studies looking at large amounts of agar (10% of the diet), not from real cases in people taking this drug. Food-sized amounts of agar are unlikely to cause trouble. If you do take agar as a fiber supplement, a smart move is to separate it from your Horizant dose by a few hours, and check with your pharmacist first.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand name: Horizant

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
