Ixazomib Citrate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the concern with agar and your Ninlaro (ixazomib). Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. Because ixazomib is a pill you swallow, that gel could in theory trap some of it and keep your body from absorbing the full dose. If that happened, you might get less of the cancer-fighting benefit you're counting on, which matters a lot in multiple myeloma treatment.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical worry based mostly on animal studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, not real human data with this drug. Small food amounts likely won't matter. Still, please run it by your oncology team or pharmacist before using agar as a supplement, and don't change anything on your own.

What Is Ixazomib Used For?

Brand name: Ninlaro

Ninlaro (ixazomib) is used to treat multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is always used together with two other medicines, lenalidomide and dexamethasone, and is approved for adults who have already tried at least one other treatment.

Ninlaro is not recommended as maintenance therapy or for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone outside of controlled clinical trials.
