Stiripentol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple picture: agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. In theory, that gel could grab onto an oral medicine like stiripentol and slow or lower how much your body absorbs. If less stiripentol gets in, it may not control Dravet syndrome seizures as well. This is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, with animal studies and no proof it actually weakens stiripentol in people.

Because seizure control is so important, I wouldn't take chances on timing. A good habit is to separate agar from your stiripentol dose by a few hours. Please run this by your pharmacist or neurologist before adding agar, and never adjust the stiripentol dose on your own.

What Is Stiripentol Used For?

Brand name: Diacomit

Diacomit (stiripentol) is used to treat seizures associated with Dravet syndrome — a severe form of epilepsy that typically begins in infancy. It is approved for patients who are already taking clobazam, are at least 6 months old, and weigh 7 kg or more.

Diacomit is not used alone (as monotherapy) for Dravet syndrome — clinical data only support its use when combined with clobazam.
