Asafoetida and Eptifibatide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Eptifibatide

Eptifibatide falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Asafoetida interacts with.

Theoretically, asafoetida might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about eptifibatide (Integrilin): it's a powerful IV anti-clotting medicine given in the hospital, usually during heart procedures or for certain heart attacks. It works by stopping your platelets from sticking together, so on its own it already raises your bleeding risk. That's why your team monitors you closely.

The concern with asafoetida is that its natural coumarins may also have a mild blood-thinning effect. Stacking that on top of eptifibatide could, in theory, add to the chance of bleeding (think easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding at IV sites). Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on how the compounds behave, not proven in people. Cooking amounts are very unlikely to matter, but tell your doctor or pharmacist about any concentrated asafoetida supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Eptifibatide page

“Eptifibatide (Integrilin) is a powerful antiplatelet drug given by IV during heart attacks and stent procedures, which means bleeding is already its main risk before any supplement enters the picture. That is why this list deserves real respect rather than a quick skim.”

Asafoetida is a strong-smelling plant resin used widely as a spice and in traditional medicine, mainly for digestive complaints.
