Drug & supplement interaction

Avocado + Carboplatin

Carboplatin brand name: Paraplatin.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Avocado and Carboplatin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Avocado and Carboplatin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Carboplatin and Avocado in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Avocado safety at a glance

Avocado overall Generally safe Avocado is widely eaten and considered safe as a food for most people.
Pregnancy Use caution Avocado as a food is fine, but concentrated supplements or extracts have not been well studied in pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Use caution Eating avocado is generally fine, but the safety of concentrated supplements while breastfeeding is unknown.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Carboplatin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Carboplatin is filed under 5 classifications — including platinum agents, alkylating agents, antineoplastics. Avocado has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being warfarin (coumadin) (moderate) — and none of Carboplatin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Avocado and Carboplatin May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Reported for Avocado but not commonly for Carboplatin: stomach upset and bloating or gas.

Effects for Carboplatin come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Avocado come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 126,273 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Carboplatin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Carboplatin

This page covers Avocado only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Carboplatin page lists 27 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Acerola (moderate), Alpha-lipoic Acid (moderate), Coenzyme Q10 (moderate) and Coffee Charcoal (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 15 moderate · 11 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Carboplatin page

“Activated charcoal is the one major-rated interaction among the 27 supplements on carboplatin's list, and it earns that spot because charcoal can lower exposure to many drugs even when they are given by vein, as carboplatin (Paraplatin) is. This is chemotherapy, so anything that blunts it puts the treatment itself at risk, and I would…”

About Avocado

What is Avocado?

Avocado
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Osteoarthritis (as ASU)
  • General nutrition and healthy fats
  • Skin and hair care
  • Blood sugar support

Avocado is a nutritious fruit rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, and potassium, and eating it as part of a balanced diet may support heart health. A specific extract called avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) has been studied for osteoarthritis, but evidence is mixed. As a food it is very safe for most people; talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

Persea americana · Lauraceae · Fruit pulp, oil, seed, and leaves · Whole fruit, avocado oil, capsules (avocado/soybean unsaponifiables or ASU), powders

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Avocado is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Avocado record says about it on its own.

Avocado: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of avocado, since it is mainly eaten as a food. A common serving is part of a whole fruit, eaten as part of a balanced diet. For supplements such as ASU, the right amount depends on the specific product, so it is best to follow the directions on the label.
