Overview
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly called Lactobacillus plantarum) is a type of beneficial bacteria known as a probiotic. It naturally lives in the human gut and is also found in many fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi, sourdough, and certain cheeses and fermented drinks.
This bacterium is very adaptable and can survive in many environments, including the acidic conditions of the stomach. Because of this, it is a popular ingredient in probiotic supplements, either alone or combined with other strains.
People take it to support digestion, gut balance, and overall wellness. Different strains of L. plantarum may behave differently, so the effects seen in one product may not apply to all.
How it works
As a probiotic, L. plantarum is thought to support a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut. It may compete with harmful bacteria for space and nutrients, helping keep unwanted microbes in check.
It produces substances like lactic acid and other compounds that can lower the pH of the gut and may slow the growth of some harmful organisms. Researchers also believe it may help strengthen the gut lining and interact with the immune system.
Many of these proposed mechanisms come from laboratory and animal studies. How strongly they apply to people in real life is still being studied.

Safety & precautions
For most healthy people, L. plantarum is considered generally safe and is found naturally in many foods. However, because it is a live organism, certain people should be careful.
People with weakened immune systems, serious illness, central venous catheters, or those who are critically ill should avoid probiotics unless a doctor recommends them, because of a rare risk of infection. The same caution applies to people who have had recent major surgery.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is not enough strong research to confirm safety. Many probiotics are thought to be low risk, but it is safest to check with your doctor or pharmacist before using a supplement during these times. Give probiotics to infants and children only with medical guidance.
Side effects
Side effects are usually mild. The most common ones include gas, bloating, and mild stomach upset, especially in the first few days of use. These often improve as your body adjusts.
Serious side effects are rare. In very rare cases, probiotics have been linked to bloodstream or other infections, almost always in people who are seriously ill or have weakened immune systems.
If you notice fever, severe stomach pain, or signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking it and seek medical care.

Since Lactiplantibacillus plantarum preparations contain live and active microorganisms, there is some concern that they might cause pathogenic infection in some patients. Lactobacilli species, including L. plantarum, have been isolated in some cases of bacteremia, sepsis, splenic abscess, endocarditis, necrotizing fasciitis, pancreatic necrosis, and meningoencephalitis. Most cases of L. plantarum infection are thought to be due to the translocation of bacteria from other locations in the body in which they occur naturally, such as the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. However, there are also rare case reports of pathogenic infections possibly related to intake of L. plantarum supplements in these populations. In one case report, the diagnosis of L. plantarum bacteremia in a regular consumer of the fermented food Nukazuk was thought to be related to the eventual diagnosis of rectal cancer.
A specific probiotic preparation (NBL probiotic ATP, Nobel) containing L. plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus casei, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, fructo-oligosaccharides, galacto-oligosaccharides, colostrum, and lactoferrin was found to be a significant risk factor for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus colonization in premature infants. Although there was no direct link to determine causation, it was hypothesized that the probiotic mixture helped to mediate the acquisition and transfer of antibiotic resistance genes.

Orally, taking Lactiplantibacillus plantarum may cause gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, stomach pain, rumbling, bloating, and flatulence; however, these events are uncommon.

Dosing
There is no single official dose for L. plantarum. Probiotic amounts are usually measured in colony-forming units (CFU), and products vary widely in how much they contain and which strain they use.
The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label. Because different strains and products are studied differently, more is not always better.
