Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Cephalexin
Cephalexin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum interacts with.
L. plantarum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. plantarum preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: this one cuts the other way from what people usually worry about. Cephalexin (Keflex) won't be weakened by the probiotic. Instead, since cephalexin kills bacteria, it can wipe out a good chunk of the live L. plantarum organisms you're swallowing. So the probiotic may just not do much for you while you're on the antibiotic.
Your cephalexin will still work normally to clear your infection, and you won't get extra side effects from this combo. The easy fix many pharmacists suggest is spacing them out by at least two hours so more of the probiotic survives. This is a theory based on how these two behave, not a danger, so don't stress. Just check with your pharmacist if you'd like to keep taking both.

What is Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum?
- Digestive health and regularity
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms
- Bloating and gas
- Immune support
- Restoring gut bacteria after antibiotics
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is a 'friendly' bacterium (probiotic) found in fermented foods and many supplements, studied mainly for digestive health. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
About Cephalexin
What Is Cephalexin Used For?
Brand names: Keflex, Keftab, Cephalex, Lexin
Cephalexin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It is used for respiratory tract infections, ear infections (otitis media), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and genitourinary tract infections — including acute prostatitis.
It works only against bacterial infections — not viruses like colds or flu. Your prescriber should use it only when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
