Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Amoxicillin
Amoxicillin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum interacts with.
L. plantarum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. plantarum preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction works against the probiotic, not against your antibiotic. Amoxicillin doesn't get weaker or stronger from taking L. plantarum, and your infection treatment won't be undermined. The note in our records is theoretical, based on simple logic rather than hard studies.
Amoxicillin kills bacteria, and it can't tell the difference between the bacteria causing your infection and the friendly bacteria in your probiotic. So if you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic may wipe out a chunk of those live organisms before they do any good. The easy fix is timing: space the two apart by at least two hours. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you set up a simple schedule.
