ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Erythromycin
Erythromycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum interacts with.
L. plantarum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. plantarum preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind: erythromycin is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to stop bacteria from growing. The catch is that the probiotic L. plantarum is made of live, friendly bacteria. So if you swallow them at the same time, the erythromycin may simply kill off a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they can do anything useful. This doesn't make your erythromycin any weaker or more dangerous, and it won't change how the antibiotic treats your infection. It just means the probiotic could be wasted.
This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not a safety problem. A simple fix is timing: take your L. plantarum at least two hours apart from your erythromycin dose. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you space them out.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Erythromycin page
“Erythromycin calls for more supplement caution than most antibiotics, and the reason is one liver enzyme, CYP3A4. Erythromycin both blocks that enzyme and is broken down by it, so grapefruit can push erythromycin levels up while St.”

About Erythromycin
What Is Erythromycin Used For?
Brand names: Erythro S, PCE, E-Mycin, Erythro-ES, EryPed Chewable, Eryc, Ery-Tab, Rythro Enca, Erythro E-C, Erythro Base, Ilosone, Ilotycin
Erythromycin treats infections caused by susceptible bacteria. The oral products (delayed-release tablets, tablets and suspensions) are labeled for mild to moderate upper respiratory tract infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. For H. influenzae, it is used together with adequate doses of sulfonamides.
Erythromycin lactobionate injection (Erythrocin Lactobionate and other lactobionate products) is used for similar infections, including lower respiratory tract infections, when oral treatment is not possible or when the infection needs high blood levels right away. Topical erythromycin 2% solution, Ery 2% pads and Spotex gel are used on the skin to treat acne vulgaris.
