Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum and Cefprozil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cefprozil

Cefprozil falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactiplantibacillus plantarum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. plantarum.
L. plantarum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. plantarum preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing a probiotic like L. plantarum with Cefprozil (Cefzil): the antibiotic doesn't really care whether the bacteria are the harmful kind making you sick or the friendly kind in your supplement. Cefprozil works by killing bacteria, so taking it at the same time as your probiotic can wipe out a good chunk of those live organisms before they ever get to work.

The good news is this goes one direction only. It may make your probiotic less effective, but it won't change how well Cefprozil fights your infection, and it won't cause new side effects. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two interact, not something proven to cause harm. A simple fix: separate the two by at least two hours. Your pharmacist can help you time them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cefprozil page

“Cefprozil (Cefzil) is a cephalosporin antibiotic, usually a short course for ear, sinus, throat, or skin infections, and three of the 60 supplements on this list warrant real caution even for a week of pills. Activated charcoal can bind the drug and pull it out of your system before it works.”
