Limosilactobacillus Reuteri Drug Interactions, Uses, Effectiveness, Safety & More
What is this page for?
First and foremost: how Limosilactobacillus Reuteri interacts with medications. The heart of this page is the interaction list — every drug Limosilactobacillus Reuteri is known to interact with, and how serious each one is.
But these pages have grown well beyond that into a full monograph — what Limosilactobacillus Reuteri is, what people use it for and how strong the evidence is, its safety and side effects, and answers to the questions we’re asked most — written and reviewed by the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases, not medical advice, and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Severity — How Serious It Can Be
- Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
- Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
- Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
- No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.
Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented
- Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
- Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
- Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Limosilactobacillus reuteri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. reuteri.
L. reuteri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. reuteri preparations by at least two hours.
Limosilactobacillus Reuteri: Uses, Safety & Side Effects
Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly Lactobacillus reuteri) is a probiotic bacterium found in the human gut and certain fermented foods. It has the most supportive evidence for reducing crying in breastfed infants with colic and for some types of diarrhea, while many other uses remain unproven. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but people who are very ill or immunocompromised should talk to a doctor first.

Overview
Limosilactobacillus reuteri is a type of friendly bacteria, also called a probiotic. It was renamed in 2020; you may still see it on labels as Lactobacillus reuteri. It naturally lives in the gut, mouth, and other areas of humans and many animals, and it is also found in some fermented foods and breast milk.
Different strains of this bacterium are sold as supplements. They come in many forms, including drops, chewable tablets, capsules, and powders. People take it most often for digestive and infant health, and some products are designed to dissolve in the mouth to support gum and oral health.
How it works
Like other probiotics, L. reuteri is thought to work by helping to balance the community of microbes living in the gut and mouth. It may crowd out harmful bacteria and support a healthier microbial environment.
Some strains produce a substance called reuterin, which can slow the growth of certain harmful bacteria, yeasts, and other microbes in laboratory tests. The bacteria may also interact with the immune system and the lining of the gut. Much of this work comes from laboratory and animal research, so the exact effects in people are still being studied.

Source & disclaimer. Effectiveness ratings and evidence summaries are provided by Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) and shown as licensed. Where Natural Medicines hasn’t rated a use, HelloPharmacist’s pharmacists may add their own reviewed rating and evidence (each such entry is labeled). This is educational information, not medical advice — talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, stopping, or changing a supplement.
Safety & precautions
For most healthy children and adults, L. reuteri is generally considered well tolerated when used as directed. However, probiotics are live organisms, so they are not risk-free for everyone.
People who are seriously ill, have weakened immune systems, have central venous catheters, or have had recent major surgery should not take probiotics without medical advice, because there have been rare reports of serious infections in vulnerable patients. Premature or critically ill infants should only use probiotics under a doctor's supervision.
Because there is limited safety information, pregnant and breastfeeding people should use caution and talk with their doctor or pharmacist before starting it. Always choose products from reputable brands, since supplements are not tightly regulated.
Side effects
Side effects are usually mild. The most common ones are gas, bloating, and mild stomach upset, especially when first starting. These often improve over a few days.
Serious side effects are rare. The main concern is a small risk of infection in people who are very ill or immunocompromised. If you develop a fever, severe stomach pain, or other worrying symptoms, stop the product and seek medical care.
Limosilactobacillus Reuteri: Reported Adverse Effects
Documented safety reports on Limosilactobacillus Reuteri from the evidence-graded Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) database, shown word-for-word from the licensed record.
Reports by conditionConstipation Gastrointestinal
Orally, taking Limosilactobacillus reuteri alone or in combination with other probiotics may cause gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea and constipation; however, these events are uncommon.

Sepsis Immunologic
Since Limosilactobacillus reuteri preparations contain live and active microorganisms, there is some concern that they might cause pathogenic infection in some patients. Some lactobacilli species have been isolated in some cases of bacteremia, sepsis, splenic abscess, endocarditis, necrotizing fasciitis, pancreatic necrosis, and meningoencephalitis. Most of these cases are thought to be due to the translocation of bacteria from other locations in the body in which they occur naturally, such as the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, and not to dietary or supplemental intake. However, there is one case of sepsis causing death of a very preterm neonate following the use of an L. reuteri supplement.
Adverse-effects data: Natural Medicines, Therapeutic Research Center
Dosing
There is no single official dose for L. reuteri. Probiotic doses are usually measured in colony-forming units (CFU), and the right amount can depend on the specific strain, the product, and the reason for use.
Because doses and strains vary so much, the best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and check with your pharmacist or doctor — especially before giving it to an infant. Do not assume a higher dose is better.
