Theoretically, taking Limosilactobacillus reuteri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. reuteri.
L. reuteri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. reuteri preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the key thing to know: this interaction runs in one direction. Telavancin (Vibativ) is an antibiotic, and antibiotics can kill off the live bacteria in your L. reuteri probiotic. So it's the probiotic that loses out, not the other way around. Telavancin's job (treating serious skin infections or pneumonia) and its own side effects, like taste changes, nausea, or kidney effects, won't be changed by taking a probiotic.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not something proven in studies, so don't be alarmed. If you want your probiotic to have the best shot at surviving, a simple fix is to separate them by at least two hours. Since telavancin is given by IV in a hospital or clinic, just ask your nurse or pharmacist about timing.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly Lactobacillus reuteri) is a probiotic bacterium found in the human gut and certain fermented foods. It has the most supportive evidence for reducing crying in breastfed infants with colic and for some types of diarrhea, while many other uses remain unproven. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but people who are very ill or immunocompromised should talk to a doctor first.

About Telavancin Injection

What Is Telavancin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Vibativ

Vibativ (telavancin) injection is used to treat two types of serious bacterial infections in adults. The first is complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI) — deep or serious skin infections caused by certain gram-positive bacteria, including both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as well as some Streptococcus and Enterococcus species.

Vibativ is also approved for hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP) caused by susceptible Staphylococcus aureus. For pneumonia, Vibativ should only be used when other treatments are not suitable. It is not meant for infections that are not caused by bacteria, and it should only be used when an infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
