ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Loracarbef

Loracarbef falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactiplantibacillus Plantarum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactiplantibacillus plantarum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. plantarum.
L. plantarum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. plantarum preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing a probiotic like L. plantarum with Loracarbef: this antibiotic doesn't care whether the bacteria are friendly or not. Loracarbef works by attacking bacterial cell walls, so it can wipe out a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms if you swallow them at the same time. This won't make your Loracarbef less effective or cause it to build up. It just means the probiotic may not do much for you.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space the two doses by at least two hours so the antibiotic isn't sitting in your gut killing the probiotic. This is a theoretical concern based on how antibiotics work, not a dangerous interaction, but check with your pharmacist if you'd like to confirm the spacing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Loracarbef page

“Activated charcoal is the entry to read first here. It carries the only major rating against loracarbef (Lorabid), an oral antibiotic, because charcoal can soak up the drug in your gut and leave too little behind to clear the infection.”
