Drug & supplement interaction

Buckwheat + Sulfacetamide

Sulfacetamide brand name: AK-Sulf.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Buckwheat and Sulfacetamide in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Buckwheat and Sulfacetamide

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sulfacetamide and Buckwheat in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Buckwheat at all — not against Sulfacetamide, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Buckwheat safety at a glance

Buckwheat overall Generally safe Buckwheat is generally safe as a food for most people, though allergic reactions can occur.
Pregnancy Use caution Buckwheat as a food is fine, but concentrated supplements have not been well studied in pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Use caution Buckwheat foods are likely fine, but safety of supplement doses while breastfeeding is unknown.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Buckwheat and Sulfacetamide May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

    Sulfacetamide

Listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Sulfacetamide, and in voluntary FDA adverse-event reports. Read the label on DailyMed ›

Reported for Buckwheat but not commonly for Sulfacetamide: a severe allergic reaction, vomiting, a stuffy or runny nose and nausea.

Effects for Sulfacetamide come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Buckwheat come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 724 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Sulfacetamide that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

About Buckwheat

What is Buckwheat?

Buckwheat
  • Heart and circulation health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Source of fiber and protein
  • Antioxidant support
  • Varicose veins or leg swelling (traditional)

Buckwheat is a nutritious, naturally gluten-free seed that is high in fiber, protein, and antioxidants like rutin. As a food it can be part of a heart-healthy diet, but evidence that buckwheat supplements treat specific conditions is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts.

Fagopyrum esculentum · Polygonaceae · Seeds (grain), and sometimes the herb (leaves and flowers) · Flour, groats, whole seeds, tea, capsules/tablets, and extracts

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Buckwheat is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Buckwheat record says about it on its own.

Buckwheat: dosing

There is no official standardized supplement dose of buckwheat. As a food, it can simply be eaten as part of a balanced diet, similar to other whole grains and seeds. For buckwheat capsules, teas, or extracts, the right amount depends on the specific product.

About Sulfacetamide Ophthalmic

What Is Sulfacetamide Ophthalmic Used For?

Brand name: AK-Sulf

Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Solution USP, 10% is used to treat conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other superficial infections on the surface of the eye caused by susceptible bacteria. These include bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella species, and others.

It is also used alongside systemic (oral or injectable) sulfonamide antibiotic therapy in the treatment of trachoma, a serious bacterial eye infection. It is important to note that this medication does not work against all types of bacteria — it does not provide adequate coverage against Neisseria species, Serratia marcescens, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and some staph bacteria are fully resistant to it.
