Calanus Oil and Desflurane

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Desflurane and Calanus Oil in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Calanus Oil at all — not against Desflurane, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Calanus Oil safety at a glance

What Calanus Oil Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Desflurane. It is the side-effect record for Calanus Oil on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Calanus Oil, this list is the first place to look.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Calanus Oil — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Desflurane’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Desflurane column appears here.

This page covers Calanus Oil only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Desflurane page lists 22 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Desflurane page

“The interaction to understand first is fever bark with desflurane, the inhaled anesthetic that keeps patients asleep during surgery. About Calanus Oil

What is Calanus Oil?

  • Heart and metabolic health
  • Source of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • General wellness
  • Exercise and weight management

Calanus oil is a marine omega-3 oil made from a small Arctic zooplankton (Calanus finmarchicus). It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids bound in a unique 'wax ester' form, and early research suggests possible benefits for metabolic and heart health, but the evidence is still preliminary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a seafood allergy or are pregnant.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Calanus Oil is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Calanus Oil record says about it on its own.

Calanus Oil: dosing

There is no official, standardized dose of calanus oil. Studies have used a fairly small daily amount, often just a gram or two per day, but products and concentrations vary. The best approach is to follow the dose printed on the product label and not exceed it.

About Desflurane

What Is Desflurane Used For?

Brand name: Suprane

Desflurane (available as Desflurane USP and Suprane) is a general anesthetic given by inhalation during surgery. In adults, it is approved both to start (induce) anesthesia and to keep it going (maintain) throughout inpatient and outpatient procedures.

In infants and children, desflurane is approved only for maintaining anesthesia — and only after anesthesia has first been started with a different agent and the child has been intubated (a breathing tube placed). It is not approved to start anesthesia in children, and it must not be used to maintain anesthesia in children who are not intubated.
