Desflurane falls under ANESTHESIA — the group Cowhage interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of cowhage and anesthesia might increase the risk of arrhythmias.
Cowhage contains levodopa. Use of levodopa with cyclopropane or halogenated hydrocarbon anesthesia has led to arrhythmias. Other anesthetics have not been implicated. Use other anesthetics in patients taking cowhage or tell patients to stop taking cowhage at least 2 weeks before surgery.

Here's the situation if you take cowhage and have surgery using desflurane (Suprane). Cowhage is a natural source of levodopa, the same dopamine-building compound used in Parkinson's medicines. Desflurane is a halogenated inhaled anesthetic, exactly the type that has been linked to this concern. When extra levodopa is floating around the body, it can make the heart more sensitive and, in theory, raise the chance of an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) during anesthesia.

I want to be honest: this is based on older, anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so it is more of a caution than a proven danger. Still, because it involves your heart during surgery, it matters. Please tell your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and pharmacist you take cowhage. Many teams ask patients to stop it about two weeks before surgery, but let them make that call.

About Desflurane

What Is Desflurane Used For?

Brand name: Suprane

Desflurane (available as Desflurane USP and Suprane) is a general anesthetic given by inhalation during surgery. In adults, it is approved both to start (induce) anesthesia and to keep it going (maintain) throughout inpatient and outpatient procedures.

In infants and children, desflurane is approved only for maintaining anesthesia — and only after anesthesia has first been started with a different agent and the child has been intubated (a breathing tube placed). It is not approved to start anesthesia in children, and it must not be used to maintain anesthesia in children who are not intubated.
