Here's the simple version: cowhage may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own, at least in animal studies. Canagliflozin (Invokana) already works to bring your blood sugar down by helping your kidneys flush out extra glucose. Stack the two together and, in theory, your numbers could drop a little lower than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This is based only on lab and animal research, so it's a theoretical concern, not something well documented in people. Canagliflozin by itself rarely causes low blood sugar unless you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Still, if you add cowhage, it's smart to watch for shakiness, sweating, or dizziness and check your glucose. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
