Here's the simple version: cowhage (Mucuna pruriens) may have a mild blood sugar lowering effect of its own, at least in animal studies. Sitagliptin (Januvia) already works to bring your blood sugar down. Stack the two together and, in theory, your sugar could drop a little lower than expected, which we call hypoglycemia.

To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based only on animal research, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Sitagliptin alone rarely causes serious lows, but watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy, especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. If you want to try cowhage, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your home glucose readings.

What Is Sitagliptin Used For?

Brand names: Januvia, Zituvio

Sitagliptin is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is available as tablets (Januvia, Zituvio, and generic sitagliptin products) and as an oral solution (Brynovin), all approved for this same use.

Sitagliptin is not for type 1 diabetes. It has not been studied in people with a history of pancreatitis, so its safety in that group is unknown.
