Desipramine falls under TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs) — the group Cowhage interacts with.

Theoretically, use of TCAs might reduce the levels and clinical effects of cowhage.
Cowhage contains levodopa. Use of TCAs might reduce the absorption of levodopa. Some case reports describe patients that developed hypertension and dyskinesia when taking both levodopa and TCAs.

Here's the gist with cowhage and desipramine (Norpramin). Cowhage is basically a natural source of L-dopa, the same active ingredient found in Parkinson's medicines. The thought is that desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, may slow how well that L-dopa gets absorbed, so cowhage could end up working less effectively. Going the other direction, a few older case reports describe people on this combo developing high blood pressure and unusual, jerky movements (dyskinesia).

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based mostly on how these compounds behave rather than strong studies. It's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially since cowhage's L-dopa content can be unpredictable. Please don't change your desipramine on your own.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
