Here's the gist: cowhage may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own, at least based on early animal studies. Since metformin is already working to bring your glucose down, stacking the two together could push your sugar a little lower than expected. That might show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling unusually hungry or foggy.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though: this is theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not human studies, so the real risk is probably small. Metformin alone rarely causes true low blood sugar. Still, if you're considering cowhage, check with your doctor or pharmacist first and keep an eye on your readings.

Metformin is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is always used together with diet and exercise, not instead of them.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets — including brands such as Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release — are approved for adults only.
