Here's the situation with acai and your Invokana (canagliflozin). Canagliflozin works in a pretty unique way, by helping your kidneys flush out extra sugar through your urine. Acai doesn't really tangle with how this drug is processed in your body. The concern here is more roundabout: some early research in healthy people suggests acai itself might nudge blood sugar up or down a little, and the results have been all over the map.

So the worry is mostly theoretical, and it's based on pharmacology rather than solid human studies. Eating acai as a food (in a smoothie or bowl) is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated acai supplements are the bigger question mark. If you do take them, just keep an eye on your blood sugar readings and let your pharmacist or doctor know what you're using so they can help you watch for any swings.

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
