Acai and Pramlintide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Pramlintide

Pramlintide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Acai interacts with.

Theoretically, taking acai with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with glycemic control.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy adults has shown that taking acai may increase or decrease levels of fasting blood glucose.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Symlin (pramlintide) works alongside your mealtime insulin to keep blood sugar from spiking after you eat. Acai isn't broken down by or competing with pramlintide in your body. The concern is simpler than that. Early research in healthy people hints that acai itself may nudge fasting blood sugar slightly up or down, and the direction isn't consistent.

So if you start taking concentrated acai supplements on top of pramlintide, your blood sugar readings could become a bit harder to predict. That matters because too low a blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) is a real risk when you combine these medications. Honestly, this is theoretical and eating acai as a food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement, and keep monitoring your levels.

By severity: 1 major · 208 moderate · 30 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pramlintide page

“The single entry rated major on the pramlintide (Symlin) list is Siberian cocklebur, which has caused severe hypoglycemia in humans, not just in lab studies. That matters more than usual here because pramlintide is injected at mealtimes alongside insulin, and a dangerous low is already the main hazard of that pairing.”

About Pramlintide Injection

What Is Pramlintide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Symlin

SymlinPen (pramlintide) is used as an add-on treatment for adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who already use mealtime insulin but still haven't reached their target blood sugar levels — even with optimal insulin therapy.

It is not a replacement for insulin. It works alongside insulin, given right before major meals, to reduce the spike in blood sugar that happens after eating.
