Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Inhaled insulin, like Exubera, works to bring your blood sugar down. Acai berry is mostly a healthy food, but a few early studies in healthy people hint that concentrated acai supplements might nudge fasting blood sugar either up or down. This is a theoretical concern based on how things work in the lab, not a proven problem, so I don't want you to be alarmed.

If acai shifts your blood sugar while you're dosing insulin, your numbers could swing in a way that's harder to predict. Watch for signs of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) or stubbornly high readings. Enjoying acai as a food is unlikely to matter much. Before starting a concentrated acai supplement, check in with your doctor or pharmacist and keep monitoring your levels.
