Acai and Insulin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin

Insulin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Acai interacts with.

Theoretically, taking acai with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with glycemic control.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy adults has shown that taking acai may increase or decrease levels of fasting blood glucose.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: enjoying acai as a food, like in a smoothie bowl, isn't likely to cause trouble with your insulin. The concern is more about concentrated acai supplements. Some early human studies hint that acai might nudge fasting blood sugar in either direction, up for some people, down for others, and this is theoretical based on lab and small studies, not strong proof.

Since insulin (NovoRapid) already lowers your blood sugar, anything that adds an unpredictable push matters. If acai happens to lower it too, you could see hypoglycemia, with shakiness, sweating, or confusion. If it raises sugar, your numbers may run high. Nothing to panic about, but if you start an acai supplement, check your readings more closely and let your pharmacist or doctor know.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin page

“Someone injecting insulin (NovoRapid) is often the same person browsing supplements sold for blood sugar support, which is exactly why this list warrants genuine caution. Nearly all 242 entries push glucose one way or the other, most often further down, stacking with insulin and raising the risk of hypoglycemia, meaning dangerously low…”
