Here's the gist: Glucovance combines two diabetes medicines, glyburide and metformin, and both work to bring your blood sugar down. Codonopsis is a Chinese herbal tonic that, in lab and animal studies, has shown its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effects. So the worry is simple addition. If the herb nudges your sugar down while your medicine is already doing the same job, the two together could push it too low.

I want to be straight with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on test-tube and animal work, not solid human studies. Still, keep an eye out for signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or confusion, since glyburide in particular can do this. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding codonopsis.

What is Codonopsis?

It appears reasonably well tolerated in food-like amounts, but you should talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
