Drug & supplement interaction

Fluoride + Duloxetine

Duloxetine brand names: Cymbalta, Drizalma Sprinkle, Irenka.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Fluoride and Duloxetine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Fluoride and Duloxetine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Duloxetine and Fluoride in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Fluoride at all — not against Duloxetine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Fluoride and Duloxetine May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

“Orally, fluoride can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Enteric-coated and sustained-release dosage forms of sodium phosphate and sodium monofluorophosphate may cause fewer adverse effects than plain sodium fluoride. Adverse effects appear to be dose related. Sodium fluoride at high daily doses of 40-65 mg can cause nausea, vomiting, and GI bleeding (15,9127).”

Fluoride in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When used orally and appropriately. Elemental fluoride is safe when used in doses below the tolerable upper intake level (UL) of 10 mg daily. Although fluoridated water has been consumed during pregnancy with apparent safety for many years, some population research suggests that more information is needed to determine a safe level of fluoride exposure for those living in regions with fluoridated water. Some emerging population research suggests that increased urinary fluoride levels during pregnancy might be associated with negative cognitive effects in the infant. However, more information is needed to determine if these results are clinically significant at the population level, as well as whether these effects are due to fluoride or to confounding factors such as socioeconomic status, use of formula instead of breast-feeding, lifestyle factors present during pregnancy, other regional environmental exposures, or the choice of IQ tests used in studies. ...when used topically and appropriately. Fluoride is safe in quantities typically found in toothpastes, mouth rinses, and professionally applied fluoride dental treatments.

Pregnancy And Lactation Possibly Unsafe

When used orally at doses above the tolerable upper intake level (UL) of 10 mg daily of elemental fluoride for prolonged periods. Long-term exposure to high doses can cause skeletal fluorosis, but pregnancy or lactation doesn't seem to affect susceptibility to skeletal fluorosis.

About Fluoride

What is Fluoride?

  • Preventing tooth decay (cavities)
  • Strengthening tooth enamel
  • Dental care for children in low-fluoride areas
  • Bone health support

Fluoride is a mineral best known for preventing cavities and strengthening tooth enamel, and it is widely used in toothpaste, mouth rinses, and community water. Supplements (drops or tablets) are sometimes prescribed for children in areas without fluoridated water, but they should be used only under professional guidance because too much fluoride can harm teeth and bones. Always check with your dentist, doctor, or pharmacist before giving fluoride supplements.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Fluoride is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Fluoride record says about it on its own.

Fluoride: dosing

There is no single supplement dose that fits everyone. The amount of fluoride a person needs depends on their age and how much fluoride is already in their drinking water. Because of this, fluoride supplement dosing for children is decided by a dentist or doctor. For everyday use, follow the directions on your toothpaste or mouth rinse label, and use only a small (pea-sized or smaller) amount of toothpaste for young children.

Taking Fluoride and Duloxetine Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Fluoride with Duloxetine?
We do not list a known interaction between Fluoride and Duloxetine. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Fluoride and Duloxetine have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 3 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Does Duloxetine interact with any supplements?
Yes. Duloxetine has documented interactions with 132 supplements in our database — Fluoride is not one of them. The Duloxetine interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
