Drug & supplement interaction

Homotaurine + Atenolol

Atenolol brand names: Tenormin, Atenix.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Homotaurine and Atenolol in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Homotaurine and Atenolol

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Atenolol and Homotaurine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Homotaurine at all — not against Atenolol, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Homotaurine safety at a glance

Homotaurine overall Use caution Generally tolerated in studies, but long-term safety as a supplement is not well established.
Pregnancy Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best avoided while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Homotaurine and Atenolol May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Atenolol page

“Atenolol lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so I want you to treat this list with real care. Of the 143 supplements and herbs on file, 119 push on your blood pressure one way or another, either dropping it further alongside atenolol, as fish oil can, or working against it, as tyramine does.”

About Homotaurine

What is Homotaurine?

  • Memory support
  • Brain and cognitive health
  • Alzheimer's disease (investigational)
  • General neuroprotection

Homotaurine (also called tramiprosate) is a small amino acid-like molecule studied mainly for slowing memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. Large clinical trials did not clearly prove it works, and it is now sold as a dietary supplement rather than an approved drug. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Homotaurine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Homotaurine record says about it on its own.

Homotaurine: dosing

There is no officially established supplement dose for homotaurine. Doses used in research were chosen for studying Alzheimer's disease and may not match what is sold in stores. If you choose to use a homotaurine product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Atenolol

What Is Atenolol Used For?

Brand names: Tenormin, Atenix

Atenolol tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina pectoris (chest pain caused by narrowed coronary arteries). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. Long-term use helps manage chronic chest pain.

Atenolol is also used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack (myocardial infarction) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death. Treatment is started as soon as the patient's condition allows, typically in a hospital setting.
