Indian Snakeroot + Tamoxifen Citrate
Tamoxifen Citrate brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox.
Indian Snakeroot has a moderate interaction with Tamoxifen Citrate. Theoretically, Indian snakeroot might inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes and reduce the metabolism of CYP2D6 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Tamoxifen Citrate
Tamoxifen Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Indian Snakeroot interacts with.
Indian snakeroot contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the wrinkle with tamoxifen: it's actually a prodrug. Your body has to convert it into its active form (called endoxifen) using a liver enzyme named CYP2D6. That active form is what does the real work of protecting against breast cancer. Anything that slows down CYP2D6 can mean less of that active compound, which may make tamoxifen less effective.
Indian snakeroot contains a small amount of yohimbine, and lab studies suggest yohimbine can block CYP2D6. The catch is that this is only theoretical, based on test-tube work, so we don't really know if it matters in real people. Still, tamoxifen is too important to gamble with. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Indian Snakeroot
What is Indian Snakeroot?
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and stress
- Insomnia
- Agitation
- Fever (traditional use)
Indian snakeroot is a traditional Ayurvedic plant that contains reserpine, a compound with real blood-pressure-lowering and sedative effects. Because its potent alkaloids can cause serious side effects like depression and very low blood pressure, it should never be used without medical supervision. It is not a safe or simple home remedy, and many countries restrict its use.
About Tamoxifen
What Is Tamoxifen Used For?
Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox
Tamoxifen is used to treat metastatic breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread) in both women and men, and as adjuvant (after-surgery) therapy for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.
In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — a very early, non-invasive form of breast cancer — tamoxifen is used after breast surgery and radiation to reduce the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Soltamox (oral solution) is specifically indicated for all of these uses in adult patients.
