L-carnitine and Menotropins

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

THYROID HORMONE

Why this applies to Menotropins

Menotropins falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group L-carnitine interacts with.

Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

I want to be upfront with you here: the interaction in our database is really about thyroid hormone medicines (like levothyroxine), not menotropins. Menotropins (Repronex, Menopur) are injectable fertility hormones, FSH and LH, used to help your ovaries develop eggs during fertility treatment. They work very differently from thyroid medication, so the carnitine-thyroid concern doesn't transfer over to them.

That said, this is outside what we have solid data on, so I'd play it safe. If you're taking L-carnitine while going through a fertility cycle, just give your fertility clinic or pharmacist a heads-up so they can confirm it fits with your plan. Please don't start or stop anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Menotropins page

“If you are using menotropins (Menopur, Repronex) for fertility treatment, I would hold off on every one of the 21 supplements on this page until your prescriber weighs in. All of them touch thyroid hormone activity in one direction or the other, and steady thyroid function matters when you are trying to get a cycle to succeed.”

About L-carnitine

What is L-carnitine?

  • Exercise performance and recovery
  • Heart health
  • Weight management
  • Energy and fatigue
  • Male fertility
  • Carnitine deficiency

L-carnitine is a compound your body makes naturally and also gets from foods like meat. It helps cells turn fat into energy, and supplements are most clearly useful for people with a true carnitine deficiency. For most other uses, like weight loss or boosting athletic performance, the evidence is mixed or limited, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.
