Low Purine Diet and Atorvastatin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Atorvastatin and Low Purine Diet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Low Purine Diet alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Low Purine Diet at all — not against Atorvastatin, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Low Purine Diet is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

This page covers Low Purine Diet only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Atorvastatin page lists 181 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Apple (major), Beer (major), Grapefruit (major) and Green Tea (major).

By severity: 9 major · 136 moderate · 36 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Atorvastatin page

“Grapefruit is the entry to understand first. Atorvastatin (Atorvaliq) is cleared by an enzyme called CYP3A4, and grapefruit blocks that enzyme, letting statin levels climb along with the risk of side effects like muscle pain.”

About Low Purine Diet

What is Low Purine Diet?

  • Gout management
  • Lowering uric acid levels
  • Preventing kidney stones (uric acid stones)
  • Reducing gout flare-ups

A low purine diet is an eating plan that limits foods high in purines, which the body breaks down into uric acid. It is mainly used to help manage gout and certain kidney stones, often alongside medication. While it can lower uric acid somewhat, diet alone usually is not enough for most people with gout, so work with your doctor on a full treatment plan.

Dietary pattern (meal plan), not a supplement

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Low Purine Diet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Low Purine Diet record says about it on its own.

Low Purine Diet: dosing

There is no fixed "dose" for a low purine diet because it is an eating pattern, not a pill. In general, the goal is to limit high-purine foods (organ meats, red meat, certain seafood, beer, and sugary drinks) while eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol are also key parts of the plan.

About Atorvastatin

What Is Atorvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Atorvaliq

Atorvastatin is used alongside a healthy diet to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), and other harmful lipids, while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. It treats primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal blood fats), hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), and inherited conditions such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia — including in children aged 10 and older.

Beyond cholesterol control, atorvastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina (chest pain) in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it — including adults with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for heart disease even without a confirmed heart disease diagnosis.
