Methionine + Liothyronine
Liothyronine brand name: Cytomel.
We found no known interaction between Methionine and Liothyronine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
Methionine and Liothyronine
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Liothyronine and Methionine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Methionine at all — not against Liothyronine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Questions About Methionine or Liothyronine
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Methionine or Liothyronine, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Liothyronine
This page covers Methionine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Liothyronine page lists 38 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Tiratricol (major), Acetyl-l-carnitine (moderate), Alpha-lipoic Acid (moderate) and Ascophyllum Nodosum (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 26 moderate · 10 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Liothyronine page
“Liothyronine (Cytomel) is the active thyroid hormone T3, and it does not tolerate interference well. Of the 38 supplements and herbs on file, 21 act on thyroid function itself, some amplifying the hormone and others blunting it, iodine-rich seaweeds able to swing either way.”

Taking Methionine as Part of a Dietary Supplement Product? Check It for Interactions
We hold 3,129 real supplement products containing Methionine, each one broken down to its full ingredient list — and combination products often carry several ingredients besides Methionine. Even though Methionine itself has no known interaction with Liothyronine, another ingredient on your label might. Find your product and we’ll check every ingredient on its label:
Where Methionine and Liothyronine Sit Against Everything Else
Out of every supplement and medication people look up on HelloPharmacist, here is where these two land this week — and which way each has been moving.

- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every Methionine reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified September 20, 2026. The Methionine and Liothyronine records this page draws on were last updated July 10, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About Methionine
What is Methionine?
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose support
- Liver health
- Urinary tract acidification
- Supporting protein and nutritional needs
- General antioxidant support
Methionine is an essential amino acid that your body needs for protein building and many basic chemical reactions. Most people get enough from a normal diet, and supplements are generally not needed unless directed by a healthcare provider. High doses can cause side effects, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using methionine supplements.
Amino acid (made through fermentation or chemical synthesis for supplements) · Capsules, tablets, powder, and as part of amino acid blends; also given intravenously in hospitals
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Methionine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Methionine record says about it on its own.
Methionine: dosing
There is no single standard supplement dose of methionine for general health, and most healthy people do not need extra beyond what they eat. Your body's daily methionine needs are normally met through a balanced diet.If a product is used, follow the directions on the label and do not take more than recommended.

About Liothyronine
What Is Liothyronine Used For?
Brand name: Cytomel
Liothyronine (available as tablets under the brand names Cytomel, Liomny, and Liothyronine Sodium, and as an injection under Liothyronine Sodium and Triostat) is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) across all its forms — whether the cause is in the thyroid itself, the pituitary gland, or the hypothalamus, and whether it was present at birth or developed over time.
The oral tablets are also used alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy to suppress TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) in people with well-differentiated thyroid cancer, and as a diagnostic agent in thyroid suppression tests. Liothyronine sodium injection is specifically indicated for myxedema coma (a life-threatening form of severe hypothyroidism) and may be used in patients who are allergic to thyroid products derived from pork or beef.
Most-Reported Side Effects for Liothyronine
From FAERS, the FDA’s public side-effect reporting system (0 reports, all brands). Reports are voluntary and are not proof the drug caused the effect.
