Muira Puama and Lamivudine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Lamivudine and Muira Puama in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Muira Puama at all — not against Lamivudine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lamivudine page

“Lamivudine (Epivir, Epivir-HBV) only holds HIV or hepatitis B in check if enough of each dose reaches the bloodstream, and nearly all 18 supplements on this list can interfere with exactly that. Activated charcoal, the single major-rated entry, can adsorb the drug outright, while fibers, gums, and mucilage herbs such as psyllium can sl…”

About Muira Puama

What is Muira Puama?

  • Low libido
  • Erectile difficulty
  • Sexual performance
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • General tonic for stress

Muira puama is a Brazilian plant traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and general tonic, often nicknamed 'potency wood.' Human research is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven, and there is little information on its long-term safety. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have a health condition or take other medicines.

Ptychopetalum olacoides · Olacaceae · Roots and bark (sometimes wood) · Capsules, tinctures, liquid extracts, teas, and powders

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Muira Puama is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Muira Puama record says about it on its own.

Muira Puama: dosing

There is no well-established or standardized dose for muira puama. Products differ in form (capsule, tincture, tea) and in how concentrated they are, so amounts on labels vary widely. The safest approach is to follow the directions on the specific product you buy and to start low.

About Lamivudine

What Is Lamivudine Used For?

Brand names: Epivir, Epivir-HBV

Lamivudine is used to treat HIV-1 infection. Epivir (lamivudine) tablets and oral solution, and lamivudine tablets and oral solution for HIV-1, are all used in combination with other antiretroviral medicines — lamivudine is never used alone for HIV-1. The dose in these products is specifically sized for HIV-1 treatment and is not appropriate for treating hepatitis B.

A separate, lower-dose product — lamivudine tablets (HBV) — is indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults with evidence of active viral replication and liver inflammation. Because resistance to lamivudine develops at a high rate, the HBV tablets should only be considered when other antiviral options with a higher barrier to resistance are not available or appropriate.
