Here's the thing to keep in mind: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you take a concentrated supplement dose, that gel can grab onto pills in your gut and slow or lessen how much actually gets absorbed. With lamivudine (Epivir or Epivir-HBV), getting the full dose into your bloodstream really matters, because steady drug levels are what keep HIV or hepatitis B suppressed. If less is absorbed, the medicine may work less well over time.

This concern comes mainly from studies on other oral drugs, not lamivudine itself, so it's a reasonable precaution rather than a proven problem. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your lamivudine first, then your guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes later. Food amounts of guar gum are unlikely to matter. Please confirm the timing with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Lamivudine Used For?

Brand names: Epivir, Epivir-HBV

Epivir (lamivudine) oral solution and tablets, and lamivudine tablets for HIV-1, are used in combination with other antiviral medicines to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. These products are dosed for HIV-1 and are not appropriate for treating hepatitis B alone.

Lamivudine tablets (HBV) — a separate, lower-dose product — are used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults who have evidence of active viral replication and liver inflammation. This HBV-specific product is generally considered only when other antiviral options with a lower risk of resistance are not available or appropriate.
