Here's the practical concern with guar gum and your fenofibrate: because guar gum turns into a thick gel in your gut, it can trap or slow the absorption of pills taken around the same time. If less fenofibrate gets absorbed, you may not get the full cholesterol and triglyceride lowering you're counting on. The effect on fenofibrate specifically isn't heavily studied, but we've seen guar gum blunt absorption of other oral drugs, so it's reasonable to be careful.

Good news: fenofibrate is not a prodrug here, so this is simply about getting the drug into your system. A simple fix is timing. Take your fenofibrate first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Confirm the spacing with your pharmacist or doctor.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Fenofibrate

What Is Fenofibrate Used For?

Brand names: Tricor, Fenofibrate, Lipidil Micro, Lipidil Supra, Antara, Lofibra, Triglide, Lipidil EZ

Fenofibrate is used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet in adults to improve abnormal lipid levels. Tricor (tablet) and fenofibrate tablets are indicated to lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B, and to raise HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) in adults with primary hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) or mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal lipid levels). They are also used to treat severe hypertriglyceridemia (very high triglycerides).

Antara and Lipofen (capsules) are indicated to reduce triglyceride levels in adults with severe hypertriglyceridemia, and to lower LDL cholesterol in adults with primary hyperlipidemia when other recommended LDL-lowering therapies cannot be used. Fenofibrate has not been shown to reduce heart attacks or cardiovascular deaths in patients with type 2 diabetes.
