Here's the practical side for your oral hydrocortisone (like Cortef tablets). Guar gum is a gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your stomach at the same time as a pill, it can trap some of the medicine and slow or lower how much actually gets absorbed. With hydrocortisone, that could mean a little less of the steroid reaches your bloodstream, which may make it less effective. If you take it to replace a hormone your body cannot make, that matters more, since under-treatment can leave you tired, weak, or dizzy.

The good news: this is easy to manage. Just separate them, taking your guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your hydrocortisone, with plenty of water. The evidence here is moderate, so check with your pharmacist before changing anything.

Brand names: Cortef, Hydrocortone, Carmol HC cream, Hydrocortisone Iodoquinol Cream, Vytone Cream, Massengil Medicated Towelettes, Dioderm, Efcortelan Cream, Mildison, Alphaderm, Calmurid HC, Efcortelan Ointment, Texacort, Alkindi Sprinkle

Hydrocortisone is used to calm skin inflammation and relieve itching caused by conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment. In adults, it treats a broad range of inflammatory skin conditions. In children as young as 3 months old, it is specifically approved for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema).

It is also used in rectal foam form to treat inflammation of the lower bowel, such as ulcerative proctitis.
