Drug & supplement interaction

Skunk Cabbage + Sarilumab

Sarilumab brand name: Kevzara.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Skunk Cabbage and Sarilumab in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Skunk Cabbage and Sarilumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sarilumab and Skunk Cabbage in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Skunk Cabbage at all — not against Sarilumab, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Skunk Cabbage and Sarilumab May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sarilumab page

“Sarilumab (Kevzara) works by quieting an overactive immune system in rheumatoid arthritis, and most of the supplements on this page push the other way. Immune stimulants such as ashwagandha, astragalus, and American ginseng could in theory blunt the drug's benefit and let joint symptoms creep back.”

About Skunk Cabbage

What is Skunk Cabbage?

Skunk Cabbage
  • Cough and bronchitis
  • Asthma and respiratory complaints
  • Skin problems and wounds (poultice)
  • Inflammation
  • Nerve and muscle complaints

Skunk cabbage is a North American plant with a long history of traditional use for breathing and skin problems, but there is very little modern scientific evidence to support these uses or to confirm it is safe. The fresh plant contains sharp calcium oxalate crystals that can cause intense burning and irritation. Because safety is poorly understood, talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Symplocarpus foetidus · Araceae · Root (rhizome) and sometimes the leaves · Dried root, tincture, extract, poultice; rarely capsules or tea

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Skunk Cabbage is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Skunk Cabbage record says about it on its own.

Skunk Cabbage: dosing

There is no established or standardized dose for skunk cabbage. Traditional preparations varied widely, and there is not enough modern research to recommend a safe and effective amount. If you choose to use a commercial product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Sarilumab Injection

What Is Sarilumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Kevzara

Kevzara (sarilumab) injection is approved for three conditions. In adults, it treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) when at least one other disease-modifying drug hasn't worked well enough or caused intolerance. It also treats polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in adults who haven't responded adequately to corticosteroids or who can't tolerate tapering them.

Kevzara is also approved for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) — a form of childhood arthritis — but only in patients who weigh 63 kg (about 139 lbs) or more. It is not approved for pediatric patients below that weight due to the lack of an appropriate dosage form.
