Some Avapritinib Products Have a Food Rule — Tansy Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Avapritinib says to take it on an empty stomach. Most supplements — Tansy included — are taken with a meal, so the easy mistake is swallowing both together at breakfast. Where that rule applies, keep Avapritinib on its own and move Tansy to a meal later in the day.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Avapritinib products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. Tansy is a traditional bitter herb that contains thujone, a compound that can be toxic in higher amounts. Because of real safety concerns and very limited modern evidence, most people should avoid taking tansy internally, and it should never be used during pregnancy.

About Avapritinib

What Is Avapritinib Used For?

Brand name: Ayvakit

Ayvakit (avapritinib) is approved to treat adults with unresectable (cannot be surgically removed) or metastatic (spread to other parts of the body) gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) that have a specific genetic mutation called a PDGFRA exon 18 mutation, including the D842V variant. Patients must be tested for this mutation before starting treatment.

Ayvakit is also approved to treat advanced systemic mastocytosis (AdvSM) — a serious condition where abnormal mast cells build up in organs — including aggressive systemic mastocytosis, systemic mastocytosis with an associated blood cancer, and mast cell leukemia. Additionally, Ayvakit treats indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM), a less severe form of the disease. It is not recommended for either form of mastocytosis if platelet counts are too low (below 50 × 10⁹/L).
