Vitamin A + Bexarotene
Bexarotene brand name: Targretin.
Vitamin A has a major interaction with Bexarotene. Concomitant use of retinoids with vitamin A supplements might produce supratherapeutic vitamin A levels.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
RETINOIDS
Why this applies to Bexarotene
Bexarotene falls under RETINOIDS — the group Vitamin A interacts with.
Retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, could have additive toxic effects when taken with vitamin A supplements.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: Bexarotene (Targretin) is itself a man-made cousin of vitamin A, called a retinoid. So if you add a vitamin A supplement on top of it, you're essentially stacking two vitamin A-like substances together. The concern is that your total "retinoid load" climbs too high, which can lead to additive toxicity.
With too much, you might see the kind of side effects that already come with bexarotene get worse, things like dry, peeling or itchy skin, chapped lips, headaches, and possibly raised triglycerides or liver-related changes. To be fair, this warning is based on how these drugs work rather than hard outcome studies, so it's a sensible caution, not a guarantee. Please don't add any vitamin A supplement without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

About Vitamin A
What is Vitamin A?
- Eye and vision health
- Skin health and acne
- Immune support
- Correcting vitamin A deficiency
- Childhood growth and development
Vitamin A is an essential nutrient important for vision, skin, immune function, and growth. Most people get enough from a balanced diet, and supplements are mainly useful for correcting a true deficiency. Because vitamin A is fat-soluble and can build up to harmful levels, more is not better, and high doses are especially risky in pregnancy.
About Bexarotene
What Is Bexarotene Used For?
Brand name: Targretin
Bexarotene capsules — sold as Targretin capsules or generic bexarotene capsules — are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), a cancer that primarily affects the skin. They are for patients who have already tried at least one other systemic (whole-body) therapy without adequate results.
Targretin gel 1% and bexarotene gel 1% are topical (applied directly to the skin) treatments for CTCL skin lesions in early-stage disease (Stage IA and IB). The gel is used when other therapies haven't worked, haven't been tolerated, or disease has persisted.
