Vitamin A and Acebutolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Acebutolol

Acebutolol falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Vitamin A interacts with.

Theoretically, taking high doses of vitamin A in combination with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver disease.
The tolerable upper intake level (UL) is the highest level of intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects. Doses of vitamin A above the UL can cause hepatotoxicity, ranging from elevated liver enzymes to liver failure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with acebutolol and vitamin A. This isn't about acebutolol building up in your body or losing its strength as a beta blocker. Your blood pressure and heart rate effects should stay the same. The concern is purely about your liver. Vitamin A is fat-soluble, and taking very high doses (above the recommended upper limit) can stress the liver on its own. Acebutolol, like many medicines, is also processed by the liver, so the worry is that piling high-dose vitamin A on top could add to that strain.

Honestly, this one is theoretical and based on expert opinion, not strong proof. Normal diet or a regular multivitamin is very unlikely to matter. If you take big vitamin A supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acebutolol page

“Acebutolol (Sectral) lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so the eight major-rated interactions on this list of 173 supplements deserve real attention. Most of the entries, well over a hundred, either stack on its blood-pressure-lowering effect and drop you too low, or push the other way and let your pressure climb back up.”

About Vitamin A

What is Vitamin A?

  • Eye and vision health
  • Skin health and acne
  • Immune support
  • Correcting vitamin A deficiency
  • Childhood growth and development

Vitamin A is an essential nutrient important for vision, skin, immune function, and growth. Most people get enough from a balanced diet, and supplements are mainly useful for correcting a true deficiency. Because vitamin A is fat-soluble and can build up to harmful levels, more is not better, and high doses are especially risky in pregnancy.

About Acebutolol

What Is Acebutolol Used For?

Brand names: Sectral, Rhotral

Acebutolol hydrochloride capsules are used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. They can be taken alone or with other blood pressure medicines, especially thiazide-type diuretics (water pills).

They are also used to manage ventricular premature beats. These are extra, early heartbeats that start in the lower chambers of the heart. The medicine reduces the total number of these beats, including paired, multiform and R-on-T beats.
