Xanthan Gum + Cyclosporine
Cyclosporine brand names: Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune, Ciclosporine, Cequa, and others.
Xanthan Gum has a minor interaction with Cyclosporine. Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities.

ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Cyclosporine
Cyclosporine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with cyclosporine and xanthan gum: xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that forms a thick gel and slows how fast your stomach empties. In theory, that gel could grab onto a medication or slow how quickly it gets absorbed. Cyclosporine isn't a prodrug, so the concern here is simply about your body absorbing a steady, predictable amount each time.
This matters more than usual because cyclosporine is a narrow therapeutic index drug, meaning even small swings in your blood level count. Too little can risk transplant rejection or a flare of your condition; too much can stress your kidneys or raise blood pressure. That said, this is only a theoretical concern. To be safe, take your cyclosporine first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. Run it by your pharmacist or transplant team to be sure.
What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

- Food thickener and stabilizer
- Bulk-forming laxative
- Thickening liquids for swallowing problems
- Gluten-free baking aid
- Blood sugar support (limited evidence)
Xanthan gum is a fermentation-made fiber widely used to thicken and stabilize foods and to thicken liquids for people with swallowing difficulties. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it for any medical purpose.
About Cyclosporine
What Is Cyclosporine Used For?
Brand names: Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune, Ciclosporine, Cequa, Verkazia, Vevye
Oral cyclosporine (such as Gengraf, Neoral and the modified generic capsules and solution) is used to prevent organ rejection in kidney, liver and heart transplants. It is also used for severe active rheumatoid arthritis that has not responded well enough to methotrexate. It is also used for severe, hard-to-treat plaque psoriasis in adults with normal immune systems.
Sandimmune capsules and injection, used with corticosteroids, prevent organ rejection and treat chronic rejection in people previously treated with other immune-suppressing medicines. Eye products have different uses. Restasis, Restasis MultiDose and generic cyclosporine eye emulsion increase tear production in dry eye linked to eye inflammation. Cequa increases tear production in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). Vevye treats signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Verkazia treats vernal keratoconjunctivitis in children and adults.

Cyclosporine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Cyclosporine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Xanthan Gum — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
