Verapamil falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the short version for verapamil and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and gut. Because of that gel, it can slow how fast things empty out of your stomach, which in theory could change how much of your verapamil dose gets absorbed and how quickly. This is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to cause real problems, and the effect (if any) is rated minor.

If absorption were nudged, you might notice slightly different blood pressure control or heart rate effects, but this is unlikely with normal food amounts. To stay on the safe side with concentrated supplement doses, a simple fix is to take your verapamil first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the xanthan gum. Run any changes by your pharmacist or doctor before adjusting things.

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
